OK, this is a continuation of the previous blog. It is raining outside and I'm sitting here in our motel room at Dawson Peaks Resort. Jim is asleep on the bed - hope he is able to sleep tonight!
So, now I'm caught up to today! This morning, we stopped at the local coffee shop, then gassed up the car and headed off on the Alaskan Highway. As we left Fort Nelson, there was a sign that said, "Next fuel 215 km" (about 120 miles for those of you metrically-challenged)
We both decided that Fort Nelson is really where we started to feel like we were way up there on the Alaskan Highway. The scenery was gorgeous! There were lots of chip-seal road projects going on and rough road. One of the things we read in the Milepost was that when they say to slow down for rough road - DO IT!!! Evidently, some of the rough road surprised a couple of motorcyclists (on 2 separate occasions today) and we said a prayer for each of them.
The RV's on the highway were plentiful. The wildlife was also plentiful. We saw caribou, stone sheep, lots of bison and moose. Muncho Lake was so beautiful - bluish-green colored water and the road was an engineering marvel! We couldn't find a picnic table, so we just pulled over beside the lake and make peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches on the hood of the car. Shortly after that, we came to Lliard Hot Springs and there were lots of picnic tables - ha!
We stopped at Lliard Hot Springs and swam. Unfortunately, we didn't bring our camera, so no pictures of that. The springs were very hot! I couldn't get very close to them because they felt so hot, but stayed down-stream of them in water that was still much warmer than bath water! It felt so good - especially after the dusty drive thru road construction. We were both so relaxed after that soak and walking the boardwalk back to our car, we saw a bull moose in the distance, grazing on grass in the wetlands near the hot springs.
Back on the highway, we drove the desolate highway for miles and miles more. Really, there wasn't a lot of traffic and even with our GPS and Milepost, I half-wondered if we had missed a turn (but then there really isn't anywhere to turn!) Finally, we came into Watson Lake. This is home of the signpost village. Holy wha! There are a ton of signs!!! We saw signs from all over the world. Our Milepost says there are over 51,000 signs in there and travelers are welcome to post their own. I wish we had thought to bring an old Michigan license plate (a Michigan Tech one would be perfect!) We gassed up, snacked up and headed on our way again. It was shortly after Watson Lake when the rain began - we drove in and out of it for a bit and then it was pretty much non-stop light rain to where we are tonight.
We really like this place. It is very sparse, simple, but hey - it has an Internet connection! We both ordered the dinner special - spaghetti and meatballs. It was fantastic. Our Milepost says this place has the best food on the Alaskan Highway. We brought a couple pieces of pie back to our room and here I sit, blogging, looking at a piece of bumbleberry pie and a piece of rhubarb pie while Jim snoozes on the bed. Think I should wake him? I think it is time.
Tomorrow night we'll be in Alaska! Woo hoo! Can't wait to see Aimee and Boyce and Walt. Wish Matt could join us too! Love to all!
