I've been out walking a lot this week and noticed that the maple trees are dripping sap all over the sidewalks. We went to early church this morning - took the city bus to church, in fact - and when walking home from the bus stop, noticed sap on the sidewalk again. So, I looked up on the internet to see where we could get some ready-made spigots here in G.R. We picked up 3 (69 cents each), drilled holes in our 3 maple trees in the front yard and within a half hour, we had a couple quarts of sap! In the bottom picture you can see that tree behind me is our fastest producer - you can see the sap is leaking down the trunk too! The video shows how quickly it is coming out, filling up the jar. After about 2 hours of dripping, we have about 6-7 quarts of syrup boiling on the stove. Hope I don't burn it! What fun!

Oh that is fun, we had a tree tap and tapped the huge tree out in our backyard on Stanley when Gabe was about 7 (a million years ago). 6 quarts of sap makes almost enough for one pancake, but the fun of using your trees to make your own is worth it. I still have that tree tap up in my sewing basket. Can't think of a use for it down here.
We used to tap the trees at our house in Romeo. My mom canned the syrup after it was cooked down outside. Of course, we had lots of sugar maples in that yard, so there was plenty to be canned even after cooking it down. Looking forward to the sun going down and it getting colder so that it slows down here - my biggest stock pot is full and the sap still keeps coming!
Awesome! I am impressed!
What am I thinking, Gabe wasn't even born when we lived on Stanley. That must have been about 2 million years ago. What a fun project.
It's 10:30 Pm and the sap is still running I think it'll go all night...We've been boiling and adding and boiling and adding - Still pretty watery - but it's getting there!
(OK - when shawn said she wanted to do this, I thought it was going to be a flop - didn't tell her that ...dang if those trees don't run like there's no tomorrow!)
That is so cool! When does your market open? You should get a longer tube to your pot! Come on mister, cereal bowl with foil and milk on top on the window sill, you can do it! All you need now is a bigger griddle!
