We went to bed last night rather disappointed because of the long lines at the Gerald R Ford Musuem. The local news was saying 60,000 people were in line and the wait was up to 8 hours. But this morning we woke up to the news that the wait was 10-15 minutes at 7:30. So, we hurried and dressed and drove right down there before work. If we didn't want to sign the guest book, we probably could have walked right in, but we wanted to sign the book. So we had about a 10-15 minute wait for that and then walked over to the museum and paid our respects to President Ford. Pretty amazing to see in person. It was very nice, very respectful, very presidential and very Grand Rapids. All the signs and mementos out at the museum sign were very touching as well. All in all, even after stopping at the Amway Grand Plaza hotel for a Starbuck's, we were downtown about 35 minutes.
Jim signed Dad's name and wrote "South High Class of '36. Go Trojans!" I signed for Jim and I.
I wish Matt could have gone with us, but he had swim practice and also is dealing with a gunky cough. Its a good thing we didn't go down last night - he needs rest. We're pushing the vitamins!
The media coverage is incredible! We crossed the pedestrian bridge over to the museum and half of the bridge was blocked off with police tape, taping off sections for reporters to do their broadcasts with the museum in the background. Then going back to our car, we crossed the Pearl Street bridge and 3 lanes of the bridge was used by the news trucks, camping out with their satellite dishes up in the air. So strange to see that sort of thing in Grand Rapids, Michigan!
